ECJv transmitted through blood transfusions

A scientific report published in the prestigious British journal The Lancet has shown that ECJv can be transmitted through blood transfusions. The discovery alarmed health systems, because it is possible that a major epidemic of the disease appear in the near future.
There is no test to determine whether or not the donated blood infected with the prion. Although the donor has no symptoms, can be found in the latent stage of the disease and transmitted through donated blood.
Reacting to the report, the British government banned donate blood to those who have received a blood transfusion at a later date to January 1980.
On 28 May 2002 the Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA) banned in turn donate blood to people who have lived in Europe in areas considered high risk for BSE and CJD between 1980 and mid – 90. Given the large number of U.S. military based in Europe, it is believed that more than 7 of them will be prevented from donating blood in compliance with this rule.
Similar measures were taken by the Australian Red Cross, which does not allow those who have lived donate time (cumulative) of at least six months in the UK between 1980 and 1996.
